Appriasal - Diamond & Sapphire Brooch
I have a 6 Ct. diamond & sapphire brooch I plan on selling at auction later this year. Back in 1982, a jeweler once told my grandmother that the sapphires were synthetic but he didn't do anything but look at it. Can you tell if they are real or fake ? The pin is from the 1930's. The diamond is about 3 ct. with large sapphires (3 ct. also) set all around it.

Usually you won't have synthetic stones on an expensive piece like you describe.

Usually you can not tell if a stone is synthetic, treated or enhanced just by looking at it. Using a jeweler's loupe (magnifier) you may make a guess but, to be certain, you need to test the stone, look at it under a gem microscope.
Usually, a larger piece like you describe will have all genuine stones but sometimes stones will be replaced over the years.
Many times I have seen gemstones that in years past were judged genuine or not, only to be proved otherwise using modern gemological techniques & tests.
Contact me and I will be glad to help you.
This is great info to know.
